1. Response to Samantha Re: Topic 6 DQ 1
I will respect the dignity of my students by taking into account their age, gender, culture, setting, and socioeconomic context (Michigan Department of Education, 2019). I will respect the student by working through academic and disciplinary issues as privately as possible, to ensure relationships can be made in the classroom. I will always fight for the least restrictive environment for each of my students. When a paraeducator is going to be supporting a student I will clearly communicate with them that the student they are working with should not feel as though they are the only ones they are working with. I will educate my paraeducator about learned helplessness to reduce the chances of dependency. I will also create opportunities to walk through IEP’s with my colleagues to answer questions and ensure they feel ready to follow through with the educational needs of our students.

As an educator, I will continue to make sure I am ethically and legally meeting the needs of my students as well as their families. I will continue to gather as many resources and information regarding rules, procedures, policies, laws and regulations relevant to my professional practice. I will continue to advocate for both my students and their families ensuring they receive as much information and support as I can give. I will continue to build strong relationships with my students as well as the families on a personal level but most importantly respect and have sensitivity to their cultural and their diversity background. As an educator, I continue to view the Florida Department of Education website and all other websites for any changes or updates. I will also review and understand the Federal Educational Rights to Privacy Act (FERPA), all while being, “aware that trust in the educational profession depends on a level of professional conduct and responsibility that may be higher than required by law” (NASDTEC 2015). It is my responsibility to ensure I am upholding myself to those ethical and legal standards to ensure student achievement and with continued support to the families.

Re: Topic 6 DQ 2
I had a conversation with one of our district special education coordinators recently in which I asked her about some of the things she does to stay current on educational trends and legislation. While she’s part of a state standards taskforce with CDE (because she’s been in education for over 25 years!), she also reads a lot of behavior journals. Especially for students with disabilities, behavior is a major topic and area of concern. One place that she also gets resources from is the Colorado Coalition of Behavioral Disorders and Peak Parent Center. She also suggested that to stay current, as a new teacher it is important to go to at least 1 or 2 conferences a year. Specifically she suggested the Courage to Risk conference held at the Broadmoor in Colorado Springs every year. Staying current on education and especially special education trends is so important, because education is changing all the time. Much like our student’s needs evolve and change, our approaches as educators need to similarly change with them so that our students can be as successful as possible. I truly believe that education is a top down process, in which educators must be able to do whatever they can, whenever they can to help their students be successful. This is one of the ways we build good rapport with our students and their families, and help them to build the confidence to try new things and be successful in school.

Just as our students, their needs, interests, strengths, and weaknesses change, so do the ways to properly support them. In addition, the trend and legislation in special education are also changing. It is important that educators create a habit of constantly staying abreast of the current events, trends, special education legislation, and other ways to support, advocate for, and educate their students. Trends in education are ever changing, sometimes changing more swiftly than other times. “Legislation enables lawmakers to address the changing needs of students and society as they change over time” (How to Keep Up with Trends in Education, 2016). Although many educators have advanced degrees and are highly educated on ways to educate a diverse and changing group of students, educators must still continue to educate themselves on the current trends and legislation in special education. In adapting with the educational trends as they change, educators must realize what trends work for them and utilize them for the greatest benefit of their students.
